Fireworks, noise, and guests: how to help your dog feel safe

The festive season is often full of joy for people, but for many dogs—especially sensitive small breeds like Maltese, Bichon Frise, and Pomeranians—it can be a real challenge. Sudden loud noises, unfamiliar people, and changes in routine may cause stress and anxiety.

Create a safe space at home
It’s very important for your dog to have a quiet place where they can retreat. This can be a bed in a calmer room with a favorite blanket or toy. Close the curtains and turn on soft music or the TV to help mask the sound of fireworks.

Keep the daily routine as stable as possible
Even during the holidays, try to maintain your dog’s usual schedule for walks, feeding, and rest. A familiar routine gives your dog a sense of security and helps them cope with changes in their environment.

Guests are not always a joy for dogs
Not all dogs enjoy attention, especially when there are many people in the house. Ask guests not to touch, pick up, or approach the dog forcefully. Let your dog decide whether they want to interact or stay in their safe place.

Walks only on a leash
During fireworks, even the calmest dogs can panic and try to run away. Always walk your dog on a leash, preferably before the fireworks begin. Avoid walks during peak firework hours.

Calm starts with the owner
Dogs are very sensitive to our emotions. If you stay calm and act normally, it will be easier for your dog to relax. Avoid excessive pity or nervous comforting—show your dog that the situation is safe and under control.
