As the weather warms up, ticks become highly active and pose a real threat to pets’ health. These parasites can transmit dangerous diseases such as babesiosis and Lyme disease, which is why providing preventive protection is an essential responsibility for every responsible pet owner. It is important to understand that there is no solution that guarantees 100% protection. However, properly selected and combined measures can significantly reduce the risk.

Primary protection – oral tablets

Veterinary tick tablets are considered one of the most effective forms of protection. They work systemically – the active substance enters the bloodstream, causing the tick to die after attaching. Tablets are administered according to the pet’s weight.

Popular options:

AdTab and FRONTPRO tablets are available in Kika stores.
In veterinary clinics you can find:

  • Bravecto – effective for up to 12 weeks, a convenient long-term solution
  • NexGard – monthly protection tablets
  • Simparica – also a reliable monthly protection

These products are especially recommended for active dogs that frequently spend time in forests or grassy areas.

Additional protection – spot-on drops

Spot-on treatments are used as an alternative or additional layer of protection. They are applied to the skin and provide a repellent effect.

Recommended products:

  • Frontline Combo – effective protection against ticks and fleas for dogs from 2 kg, with tick protection lasting up to 4 weeks
  • Ataxxa – protects against ticks and fleas, also repels mosquitoes, suitable for dogs up to 4 kg
  • Fypryst Spot-On – a cost-effective option for routine prevention for dogs from 2 kg, with protection lasting up to 4 weeks

It is important to follow the instructions and not use these products more frequently than recommended.

Collars – long-term protection

Chemical collars are a convenient solution for those seeking long-lasting protection without frequent application.

Recommended options:

  • Foresto – provides protection for up to 7–8 months, one of the longest-lasting solutions
  • Vetocanis – plant-based, free from chemical insecticides, making it suitable for sensitive or allergic pets

Additional protection during walks

The highest risk of tick exposure occurs in tall grass, forests, and parks. In such environments, additional protective measures are recommended.

Sprays or essential oils:

  • Anibio Melaflon – a plant-based repellent spray for short-term protection, suitable even for young pets and use around children
  • Lemongrass essential oil – its natural citrus scent may help repel mosquitoes and other irritating insects; a 100% natural alternative

Sprays provide shorter protection, so they should be applied before each walk in high-risk areas.

Regular inspection – an essential part of prevention

Even when using the most effective products, it is essential to check your pet after every walk.

Special attention should be given to the ears, head area, legs, belly, and underarms. If you find an attached tick, carefully remove it using special tick-removal tools (available at KIKA), ensuring that no parts remain in the skin. The tick should be removed gently without squeezing its body. After removal, disinfect the bite area and monitor your pet for several days. If symptoms such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or other unusual signs appear, consult a veterinarian immediately. Early detection of a tick significantly reduces the risk of infection.
